Sharing My Experiences to Give You Inspiration
Early Life Challenges
My name is Abigail Brown, a survivor of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I was infected by this disease when I was only three years old. Unfortunately, I was misdiagnosed, which caused extensive damage to my brain.
The doctors said that I would completely recover in a year, but they were wrong. This made my family’s lives turn upside down when they learned that I would never be able to speak again or live a normal life like many of my friends.
Getting Through
I am thankful that the type of dystonia I have doesn’t cause chronic pain. During the past 20 years of living with a serious illness, it has been a blessing to undergo only three major surgeries. I was 8 years old when I surpassed the first operation and was 18 when I got through the second one for my twisted legs. In June of 2016, I had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, which is currently in the trial-and-error stages.
